Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly reacted to the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, warning that the region is being pushed toward a wider and more dangerous war.
In a sharply worded post on X, Gandhi said the intensifying hostilities threaten millions of lives, including nearly one crore Indians living and working in the Middle East.
“Violence Begets Violence”
Rahul Gandhi stressed that while national security concerns cannot be ignored, actions that violate the sovereignty of nations will only deepen instability.
He wrote, “Escalating hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran are pushing a fragile region toward wider conflict. Crores of people, including nearly a crore Indians, face uncertainty.”
He further stated, “While security concerns are real, attacks that violate sovereignty will only worsen the crisis. The unilateral attacks on Iran, as well as Iran’s attacks on other Middle Eastern nations, must be condemned. Violence begets violence – dialogue and restraint remain the only path to peace.”
Call for Moral Clarity in Foreign Policy
The Congress MP argued that India must take a clear moral position rooted in international law and humanitarian values.
He emphasised that India’s foreign policy has traditionally stood for sovereignty and peaceful resolution of disputes. According to him, this guiding principle must remain consistent even during global crises.
“India must be morally clear. We should have the courage to speak plainly in defence of international law and human lives,” Gandhi said.
Direct Question to PM Modi
Rahul Gandhi directly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over what he described as silence on the issue.
“PM Modi must speak up. Does he support the assassination of a head of state as a way to define the world order? Silence now diminishes India’s standing in the world,” he posted.
The remarks come at a time when tensions in West Asia have sharply escalated following major military strikes and retaliatory actions. India has so far maintained a cautious diplomatic stance, calling for restraint and dialogue without openly siding with any country involved in the conflict.
Political Debate Intensifies
Gandhi’s statement is expected to trigger political debate within India over the government’s approach to the crisis. While the Centre has focused on safeguarding Indian citizens in the region, opposition leaders are pressing for a more explicit diplomatic position.
With a large Indian diaspora spread across Gulf nations, developments in the region carry significant humanitarian and economic implications for New Delhi.
As the conflict continues to unfold, all eyes are now on the government’s next move and whether it will issue a more detailed response to the unfolding war.
