The Union government has stepped up internal security monitoring following the sharp escalation in West Asia. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has formally alerted all states and Union Territories to remain on heightened vigilance amid fears that overseas developments could trigger unrest within India.
According to officials, the advisory was circulated on February 28 and urged state administrations to closely monitor sensitive areas, strengthen intelligence coordination, and take preventive steps to avoid any law-and-order disturbances.
Focus on Inflammatory Speeches
In its communication, the MHA reportedly asked state authorities to identify and monitor individuals delivering provocative speeches that could inflame communal sentiments. The advisory specifically mentioned keeping watch on sermons or public addresses that may exploit global tensions to create domestic unrest.
Security agencies have been asked to increase intelligence sharing and maintain close coordination with local police units. Officials emphasised that while the advisory is precautionary in nature, authorities must remain alert given India’s diverse social fabric and the potential for misinformation or inflammatory rhetoric to spread rapidly.
Concerns Over Regional Fallout
The alert follows intensifying hostilities in West Asia involving Israel, the United States and Iran. With missile strikes and retaliatory actions reported across parts of the Gulf, the Centre is assessing not only geopolitical consequences but also possible internal ripple effects.
Government sources indicated that developments abroad can sometimes be misused by fringe elements to amplify tensions locally. As a result, preventive preparedness is being prioritised to ensure peace and communal harmony.
PM Modi Reviews Situation, Speaks to Israeli PM
Amid the evolving crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the regional security environment. During the discussion, PM Modi conveyed India’s concerns and stressed that civilian safety must remain paramount. He reiterated the importance of an early cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue.
The Prime Minister also chaired a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation. Senior officials briefed the committee on recent airstrikes, retaliatory actions, and their broader implications.
Safety of Indians Abroad a Key Concern
One of the primary concerns discussed during the CCS meeting was the security of the large Indian expatriate population living in Gulf countries. The committee reviewed contingency plans to assist Indian nationals who may face travel disruptions or safety challenges.
Officials also examined the impact on Indian students scheduled to appear for examinations abroad, as well as travellers transiting through affected airspace. Economic and commercial implications were part of the broader assessment.
The CCS directed all relevant departments to take feasible measures to support Indian citizens if required and reiterated India’s call for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement.
