The United States has formally labeled Iran a “State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention,” intensifying diplomatic pressure on Tehran amid sharp divisions in Washington over the possibility of a broader military confrontation.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the designation, accusing Iranian authorities of systematically detaining foreign nationals to gain political leverage. He said the practice dates back decades and must come to an immediate halt.

Rubio warned that if Iran fails to change course, the US could impose further steps, including potential travel restrictions for American passport holders traveling to or through Iran. He also urged all US citizens currently in Iran to leave without delay, citing safety concerns.

Political Storm in the Senate

The announcement coincided with heated debate in Congress over the administration’s Iran strategy. Senator Jack Reed cautioned against military escalation, arguing that war should only be considered as a last resort. He stressed that Congress has not been fully briefed and reminded lawmakers that constitutional authority to declare war rests with the legislative branch.

Senator Tim Kaine renewed his push for a bipartisan War Powers Resolution, calling for a formal congressional vote before any armed action is taken. He questioned whether military conflict would serve US interests, warning of long-term costs in lives, resources, and global credibility.

In contrast, Senator John Kennedy adopted a firmer tone, arguing that the confrontation with Iran has been ongoing for years. He called on Tehran to halt nuclear enrichment, scale back missile development, and end support for armed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Justice Department Targets Oil Shipment

Separately, the US Justice Department filed a civil forfeiture complaint to seize the Motor Tanker Skipper along with nearly 1.8 million barrels of crude oil. Authorities allege the shipment was linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and violated existing sanctions.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi said the action demonstrates Washington’s determination to cut off revenue streams that could fund destabilizing activities.

Background of Rising Tensions

Relations between Washington and Tehran have remained strained for years, particularly after the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Sanctions targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs have remained in place, and periodic flare-ups have fueled fears of open conflict.
