In a dramatic political shift ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has officially joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Soon after his induction, he launched a scathing attack on his former colleague and rival Edappadi K. Palaniswami, accusing him of running the AIADMK in an autocratic manner.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Panneerselvam, popularly known as OPS, said the leadership style of Palaniswami has pushed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam into a position where electoral success has become nearly impossible.
“Forced to End a Bitter Chapter”
OPS stated that his decision to join the DMK was not sudden but came after prolonged internal conflicts and what he described as a “painful political journey.” He said he had no option but to close that chapter and move forward.
He thanked Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for welcoming him into the party and said he would work as an ordinary cadre to strengthen the DMK’s organisational structure.
According to OPS, the DMK government has been delivering effective governance and people are responding positively to its policies.
Direct Attack on EPS Leadership
In his remarks, OPS alleged that Palaniswami has deliberately prevented emerging leaders from gaining influence, especially from southern Tamil Nadu. He claimed this approach has weakened the AIADMK at a crucial time when unity is required ahead of elections.
He further argued that the future of the Dravidian political movement depends on strong ideological commitment and organisational strength, something he believes the DMK currently represents.
Political Impact Before Elections
OPS’s switch is expected to intensify political rivalry in Tamil Nadu. His move could influence voter perception in certain regions where he holds support.
