Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib in connection with a protest that took place during the AI Summit in the national capital. The demonstration was held near Bharat Mandapam, the venue where the international event was underway. Police said Chib was questioned for several hours before being taken into custody. He is expected to be produced before a court later in the day.

Police Claim Key Role in Protest Planning

According to India TV sources, the Youth Congress leader allegedly had detailed knowledge about how the protest was planned and executed. Police sources said initial findings suggest he may have been involved in shaping the structure and timing of the demonstration that drew security attention during the summit.

Alleged Non-Cooperation During Questioning

Officials stated that during interrogation, Chib did not fully cooperate with the investigation. Police claimed that he avoided giving clear answers on certain points and denied awareness of some developments related to the protest. Based on the material collected so far, authorities said they had enough grounds to proceed with the arrest.

Sections Applied in the Case

Delhi Police have invoked several legal provisions in the FIR related to the AI Summit protest. These include charges linked to criminal conspiracy, obstructing public servants from duty, unlawful assembly, disobedience of official orders, and acts said to affect public harmony and national integration.

Congress Leader Slams Police Action

Senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel criticised the arrest and termed it unjustified. In a post on social media platform X, he said detaining Youth Congress members for raising issues peacefully goes against democratic values. He argued that the protest was non-violent and aimed at drawing attention to concerns faced by the youth. Baghel demanded the immediate release of Chib and others and called for all charges to be withdrawn.

More Arrests as Probe Widens

In the latest development, police have made a fifth arrest in the case. The accused, identified as Jitendra Yadav, was picked up from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and later produced before a court, which granted police custody for two days.

Earlier, four Youth Congress workers had already been arrested. The Crime Branch and Special Cell have also detained additional suspects following raids in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Police confirmed that individuals from Gwalior, Bhind, Jhansi, and Lalitpur have been taken into custody.
