Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Wednesday announced that biennial elections for 37 Rajya Sabha seats will be held on March 16, 2026. These seats are scheduled to fall vacant at different times in April.

States Going to Polls

The elections will be conducted across 10 states, including Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar. Lawmakers elected in these polls will serve their respective terms as members of the Upper House of Parliament.

According to the Election Commission, the biennial elections are a regular process to fill vacancies arising due to the completion of terms of sitting members. The Commission will release detailed schedules for nomination filing, scrutiny, and counting of votes in the coming days.

Political parties in the respective states have already begun strategizing for the polls, as these Rajya Sabha seats play a crucial role in parliamentary proceedings, especially in passing legislation and maintaining party strength in the Upper House.
