Metro Construction Mishap in Mulund Claims One Life, Three Injured After Concrete Segment Falls on Vehicles

Mumbai: A fatal accident at a Metro construction site in Mumbai’s Mulund West area left one person dead and three others injured on Saturday afternoon after a heavy concrete segment fell onto vehicles moving along LBS Marg.

The incident took place around 12:20 pm near an under-construction stretch of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s Metro Line 4 project, close to the Johnson & Johnson premises and near the Mulund Fire Station. According to officials, a large concrete slab or parapet portion detached from an elevated structure and crashed onto vehicles passing beneath.

Eyewitnesses said the falling debris struck a car and an autorickshaw directly, crushing parts of the vehicles and trapping occupants inside. Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes after distress calls were made. Fire brigade teams, police personnel, local ward staff and ambulance services launched rescue operations, carefully lifting debris to pull out those trapped.

One of the victims, identified as Ramdhan Yadav, was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. Three others sustained injuries in the accident. Rajkumar Yadav, 45, was reported to be in critical condition, while Mahendra Pratap Yadav, 52, and Deepa Ruhiya, 40, are undergoing treatment and are said to be stable.

Visuals from the site showed severely damaged vehicles and rescue workers assisting the injured. The area was immediately cordoned off to prevent further risk, and traffic movement along the busy LBS Marg stretch was temporarily halted, causing congestion in the vicinity.

In a statement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said the mishap occurred near one of the piers of the Metro Line 4 corridor during ongoing construction work. The agency confirmed that a structural portion fell from height and struck a passing autorickshaw. Officials said the project team is on site coordinating with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and disaster management authorities to secure the area and assist those affected.

Authorities have initiated a preliminary investigation to determine what led to the structural failure. Safety protocols and quality checks at the construction site are expected to come under scrutiny as part of the inquiry.
