Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory in Bangladesh’s 13th general elections, marking the party’s return to power after nearly 25 years. Taking to X, PM Modi said, “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory reflects the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership.”

He added, “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”

The BNP-led coalition is currently leading in 209 of 300 parliamentary seats, comfortably crossing the two-thirds majority mark, while the BNP alone is ahead in 165 constituencies, leaving its closest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami, leading in 62 seats. Tarique Rahman, who contested from both Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17, has emerged as the central figure in the party’s landslide victory. Senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also performed strongly, securing a massive lead of nearly 2.5 lakh votes in Thakurgaon-1, according to reports.

BNP supporters celebrated nationwide as the party moves to form the next government, signaling a historic political shift in Bangladesh after years of Awami League dominance. India has expressed its readiness to collaborate closely with the new leadership, reinforcing ties and promoting democratic, progressive governance under Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
