Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday publicly welcomed Sunetra Pawar into her new role, congratulating her after she scripted history by becoming Maharashtra’s first-ever woman Deputy Chief Minister. The message came soon after her oath-taking ceremony in Mumbai, marking a major political moment for the state.
In his message shared on social media, the Prime Minister praised Sunetra Pawar’s new responsibility and expressed confidence in her leadership. He said he believed she would dedicate herself fully to public service and continue the developmental path associated with the late Ajit Pawar, a towering figure in Maharashtra politics.
Sunetra Pawar, aged 62, took oath at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai amid emotional scenes. As she assumed office, leaders and workers of the Nationalist Congress Party raised slogans in memory of Ajit Pawar, reflecting the deep emotional undercurrent surrounding the ceremony.
Her elevation comes barely days after Ajit Pawar lost his life in a tragic air crash near Baramati on January 28. In the aftermath of the incident, the NCP, which is part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, moved swiftly to fill the leadership vacuum. The party unanimously chose Sunetra Pawar as the leader of its legislature group, paving the way for her entry into the state cabinet.
The decision is being seen as both a political and emotional step—aimed at ensuring stability within the party while honoring Ajit Pawar’s legacy. Party insiders say the move reflects trust in Sunetra Pawar’s understanding of governance and her familiarity with public life.
Interestingly, earlier in the day, senior leader Sharad Pawar stated that he was not aware of any plan regarding Sunetra Pawar’s swearing-in. Speaking to reporters in Baramati, he remarked that such decisions rest entirely with the party concerned.
