Mumbai: Bank employees across the country are preparing for a decisive nationwide agitation to demand the implementation of a five-day work week. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a one-day nationwide strike on January 27, 2026, protesting the government’s continued delay in implementing the long-pending demand.
The issue dates back to 2010 when bankers, in principle, accepted a five-day work week. At that time, two half-working Saturdays were abolished and the remaining two Saturdays were declared full holidays. Subsequently, during the 11th Bipartite Settlement, the demand for a complete five-day work week was again accepted, and it was agreed that a formal proposal would be submitted to the government.
Once again, during the 12th Bipartite Settlement, the demand was accepted in principle, with assurances that recommendations for implementation would be forwarded to the government. Accordingly, the proposal was submitted. However, for the past two years, the government has failed to take a concrete decision, leading to growing resentment among bank employees.
Union leaders have accused the government of double standards. While the government promotes Digital India and digital banking, it continues to delay a decision on a five-day work week, often citing customer inconvenience as a reason.
The unions pointed out that institutions such as LIC, Reserve Bank of India, NABARD and SEBI already follow a five-day work week. Despite accepting the demand in principle, the government has failed to extend the same benefit to bank employees, which the unions term as discriminatory treatment.
Due to the strike on January 27, combined with regular holidays, banks are expected to remain closed for four consecutive days, causing disruption to customers. The UFBU has apologised to customers for the inconvenience but stated that the agitation is unavoidable.
In Mumbai, bank employees will gather at Azad Maidan at 11:00 a.m. on January 27 to hold a massive protest against the government and bank management. Similar demonstrations, rallies and public meetings will be organised across major cities in Maharashtra.The strike call was issued by Devidas Tuljapurkar, General Secretary, United Forum of Bank Unions, who said employees are left with no option but to intensify their struggle to secure fair working conditions.
