“Pongal Belongs to the World Now,” Says PM Modi at Festive Gathering in Delhi

Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday joined Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan, describing the harvest festival as one that has crossed regional boundaries and gained global recognition. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said Pongal reflects India’s deep-rooted tradition of respecting nature and honouring the contribution of farmers.

Speaking at the event attended by Union Ministers, senior officials and members of the Tamil community, PM Modi highlighted that Pongal is not just a cultural occasion but a reminder of the close bond between human life, agriculture and the environment. He said the festival teaches the value of gratitude—not only towards people, but also towards the land, the Sun and natural resources that sustain life.

The Prime Minister noted that Tamilians living across the world celebrate Pongal with pride and emotional connection, helping take the festival beyond India’s borders. He said he felt honoured to be part of a tradition that continues to unite people globally through shared values and cultural identity.

PM Modi also praised Tamil civilisation, calling it one of the world’s oldest living cultures that continues to guide modern India with its wisdom and traditions. He said India’s progress today is firmly linked to its cultural foundations, which emphasise harmony, unity and respect for nature.

Highlighting environmental responsibility, the Prime Minister stressed that Pongal’s message is especially relevant in today’s world. He said protecting soil health, conserving water and using natural resources carefully are duties owed to future generations. He linked these ideas to national initiatives such as Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Amrit Sarovar, saying they reflect the same philosophy embedded in traditional festivals.
