Delhi: German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Ahmedabad on Monday, marking the beginning of a significant two-day official visit to India aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. The visit, taking place from January 12 to January 13, is Chancellor Merz’s first trip to India since taking office in May 2025 and comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The opening leg of the visit has been planned to highlight India’s cultural heritage alongside diplomatic engagement. Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz are scheduled to begin the day with a visit to the historic Sabarmati Ashram, underlining shared values of peace and dialogue. This will be followed by their participation in the International Kite Festival at the Sabarmati Riverfront, a symbolic event intended to showcase people-to-people connections and cultural exchange between the two nations.
Later, the focus will shift to substantive discussions, with both leaders holding delegation-level talks at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. These talks are expected to assess the current state of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which recently completed 25 years, and identify new areas for future cooperation.
According to officials, the discussions will cover a wide range of subjects, including boosting trade and investment, strengthening collaboration in technology and innovation, expanding education and skill development programmes, and improving mobility opportunities. Defence cooperation, security dialogue, scientific research, and green and sustainable development are also expected to feature prominently on the agenda.
In addition to bilateral matters, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz are likely to exchange views on key regional and global developments. Engagements with business and industry leaders from both countries are also planned, reflecting a shared emphasis on economic cooperation and long-term growth.
The visit is seen as a step towards reinforcing the momentum generated by recent high-level interactions between India and Germany, including their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada.
