Mumbai: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Tuesday firmly dismissed allegations that he threatened opposition leaders during the nomination process, calling the viral video circulating on social media “completely false, selective, and misleading.”

Breaking his silence amid mounting political pressure, Narwekar said the controversy was being deliberately manufactured to malign his image and distract from the smooth conduct of civic elections. He categorically denied violating the Model Code of Conduct or interfering in the nomination process in any manner.

“The allegations being levelled against me are entirely baseless. I did not threaten anyone, nor did I instruct the police to withdraw security from any leader,” Narwekar said, asserting that the viral clip does not reflect the full context of the situation.

The Speaker claimed that he was, in fact, the one who faced obstruction at the nomination venue. According to Narwekar, a former MLC and his security personnel attempted to block his movement and created unnecessary chaos outside the Returning Officer’s office, forcing him to alert the police authorities.

“I went there only to ensure that the nomination process was conducted peacefully. Certain individuals created a disturbance, and I merely asked the police to maintain law and order. There was no abuse of authority,” he clarified.

Narwekar also rejected accusations that he remained inside the Returning Officer’s office to influence the filing of nomination papers or that opposition candidates were prevented from submitting their forms. He maintained that all candidates were given equal opportunity and that the election process followed due procedure.

Responding to demands for criminal action, the Speaker said such calls were politically motivated and aimed at creating controversy during a sensitive election period. He added that he had already submitted a formal complaint to the police regarding the alleged pressure and obstruction he faced at the site.

While opposition parties continue to demand action and an investigation, Narwekar said he would fully cooperate with any inquiry initiated by the State Election Commission. “The truth will come out once all facts are examined. I have nothing to hide,” he said.
