Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday mounted a sharp political offensive against the Mamata Banerjee–led Trinamool Congress government, alleging that West Bengal has been trapped in a cycle of fear, corruption, and stalled development for over a decade.
Addressing a press conference, Shah claimed that governance in the state has collapsed due to what he described as entrenched corruption and political appeasement. He alleged that central welfare schemes launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi have failed to reach the people of Bengal because of syndicate-driven corruption at the local level.
According to Shah, West Bengal has fallen behind while neighbouring states have progressed. He asserted that states like Assam and Tripura have successfully curbed illegal infiltration, while Bengal continues to struggle because of the state government’s approach. “Infiltration has been controlled elsewhere, but it continues unabated in Bengal,” Shah said, directly blaming the state administration.
The Home Minister also raised questions about border security, accusing the Bengal government of deliberately delaying fencing work along the international border. “Which government refuses to give land for border fencing?” Shah asked, answering his own question by pointing at the Trinamool Congress administration. He alleged that illegal immigrants enter the country primarily through Bengal and claimed that local administrative machinery has failed to act.
Calling infiltration a serious national security concern, Shah said the issue goes beyond state politics. He argued that protecting the country’s borders and cultural identity requires decisive governance, which, according to him, only the BJP can provide. “This is not just a Bengal issue; it is about the nation’s security,” he stated.
Striking a confident tone ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, Shah predicted a decisive victory for the BJP in West Bengal. Citing the party’s steady rise in vote share and seats over the past decade, he said the BJP has transformed from a marginal presence into the principal opposition and is now poised to form the next government.
