Mumbai: After suffering a disappointing performance in the recent municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, the Congress has stepped up efforts to rebuild its political strategy in Mumbai, with a possible alliance with Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA) emerging as a key option ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
Over the past ten days, senior leaders from both sides have held multiple rounds of discussions, including a meeting on Sunday between a Congress delegation and Prakash Ambedkar. The Congress team was led by UB Venkatesh and included leaders Sachin Sawant and Aslam Shaikh. The talks reportedly focused on the feasibility of contesting the BMC polls together.
To streamline negotiations, the Congress has also constituted a three-member internal panel, comprising Amin Patel, Madhu Chavan, and Sachin Sawant, to coordinate alliance talks and assess political ground realities in Mumbai. Party sources indicate that discussions with VBA have been constructive so far, and an announcement could follow if consensus is reached.
Commenting on the latest meeting, Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad said the interaction reflected the importance of dialogue and democratic engagement in the evolving political scenario.
The renewed alliance push comes as Mumbai prepares for high-stakes civic elections on January 15, with vote counting scheduled for January 16. These polls will cover 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including the cash-rich BMC.
The Congress’s rethink follows the recent clean sweep by the ruling Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP—in the two-phase civic elections. According to the State Election Commission, the Mahayuti dominated the results, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners failed to present a united front.
With Shiv Sena (UBT) exploring a separate understanding with Raj Thackeray’s MNS, and Congress opposing that move, the party is now actively searching for an alternative political partner to strengthen its position in Mumbai’s crucial civic contest.
