Mumbai: Counting for the Maharashtra Civic Body Elections 2025 is underway across the state, and early results suggest that the ruling Mahayuti alliance has secured a clear upper hand in several urban local bodies. Following a fiercely contested two-phase polling process, trends indicate that the ruling coalition has strengthened its hold on key Nagaradhyaksha (municipal council president) posts, reflecting growing organisational depth and voter confidence at the grassroots level.

Reports from regional media show Mahayuti candidates leading in a majority of municipal councils and nagar panchayats, reinforcing the alliance’s political dominance ahead of upcoming high-stakes elections. However, the results have not been uniform across regions, with Konkan—particularly Sindhudurg district—emerging as a zone of sharp political contrast and unexpected outcomes.

One of the most talked-about developments has come from Kankavli, where the Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a significant setback. BJP-backed candidates were defeated by Sandesh Parkar of the Shahar Vikas Aghadi, despite the saffron party contesting against a consolidated opposition front. Parkar’s victory has been viewed as a strong local mandate, driven by high voter turnout and town-specific issues rather than broader alliance politics.

Addressing supporters after his win, Parkar stated that the electorate had clearly voted for change and accountability. He highlighted that nearly four out of five voters participated in the election, calling it a strong endorsement of democratic engagement. Parkar said the verdict reflected public trust in promises of transparent governance, development without fear, and the protection of Kankavli’s cultural and spiritual identity.

In contrast, nearby Malvan delivered a decisive victory for the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, consolidating the party’s influence in the coastal Konkan belt. The win has been seen as a morale booster for the Shinde faction, especially in a region traditionally marked by intense political rivalries. Nilesh Rane, who played a key role in the Malvan campaign, attributed the success to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s leadership and sustained grassroots outreach.

Speaking on the results, Rane acknowledged the emotional duality of the outcome within the alliance. He noted that while celebrations were underway in Malvan, the defeat in Kankavli was equally personal, as both victories and losses involved political allies and long-standing relationships. Emphasising democratic values, he said the people’s verdict must be accepted with humility and respect.
