“How Long Will They Fool The Country?”: Shivraj Singh Chouhan Hits Back At Congress Over Scheme Renaming Debate

Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of misleading the public over the renaming of government schemes and politicising the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Reacting to criticism from Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi, Chouhan questioned the party’s moral authority on naming welfare programmes. “How much will they fool the country? Our sister Priyanka Gandhi was saying—just because they added the name ‘Gandhi’. Even Gandhi’s legacy has been misused by Congress,” he said while speaking to reporters in Delhi.

Chouhan rejected the allegation that the Modi government was arbitrarily changing names, stating that such decisions were historically taken by Congress governments themselves. “She was asking under whose authority this name change is happening. It is not under the Modi government’s authority. The authority for naming lies with Congress,” he remarked.

The Union Minister further pointed out that several schemes launched by state governments under Congress rule continue to carry the names of former Prime Ministers from the Gandhi family. “There are 25 schemes named after Rajiv Gandhi and 27 schemes named after Indira Gandhi. These were not named under the Modi government’s authority,” Chouhan said, underscoring what he described as double standards.
