Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday launched a strong counterattack against opposition parties Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), rejecting their allegations of “high-handedness” by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections scheduled for December 14. Mann asserted that the repeated accusations by rival parties clearly indicate that they have already reconciled themselves to defeat in the rural body polls.
Reacting to claims made by Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who alleged that the AAP government had printed fake ballot papers for the elections, Mann described the charges as baseless and politically motivated. Addressing mediapersons, the Chief Minister said the opposition had resorted to blame games because it lacked confidence on the ground.
“The moment elections approach and they sense defeat, these parties start making allegations of rigging and misuse of power. This itself shows they have accepted their loss even before votes are cast,” Mann said, firmly denying any wrongdoing by his government.
To counter the opposition’s narrative, Mann presented detailed election data to underline the transparency of the process. He pointed out that out of 2,833 block samiti seats, a total of 340 AAP candidates have been elected unopposed, along with three candidates from the Congress and eight independents. “If there was any pressure or high-handedness, how did opposition and independent candidates get elected unopposed?” he questioned.
