Delhi: Congress MP KC Venugopal on Saturday mounted a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of sidestepping crucial issues raised by the Opposition during the recent Lok Sabha debate on electoral reforms. Venugopal said the Home Minister failed to offer clear and factual responses to concerns highlighted by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition members.
Speaking to the media, Venugopal alleged that instead of addressing questions related to electoral transparency and voter roll integrity, Shah chose to make politically charged remarks. He objected strongly to Shah’s reference to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, calling it historically inaccurate and misleading. According to Venugopal, such statements not only distort facts but also amount to an indirect attack on the values represented by Mahatma Gandhi.
“The House deserved serious answers, not diversionary comments,” Venugopal said, adding that Shah’s speech appeared defensive rather than informative. He maintained that the Opposition had raised substantive concerns regarding electoral processes, but the government avoided responding point by point.
The Congress leader further claimed that the Opposition is facing systematic pressure from institutions and agencies. He described the political contest as a broader struggle against the influence of money and power, asserting that the fight is ultimately about safeguarding democratic principles and the Constitution. Venugopal expressed confidence that public opinion would support efforts to protect democratic institutions.
He also referred to Rahul Gandhi’s demand for an open debate on issues flagged by the Opposition, including alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls. However, the Home Minister made it clear that Parliament would function according to established procedures and not under pressure, stating that he would respond in a structured manner and at an appropriate time.
