Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday declared a significant expansion of Mumbai’s suburban railway network, confirming that the Centre has approved 10 new local train services on the Uran route. Calling it a “special gift for Mumbaikars”, Fadnavis shared that the clearance came through an official letter from the Ministry of Railways in response to his formal request to improve connectivity on the rapidly growing corridor.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for swiftly acting on the proposal. He said the new services would substantially ease daily travel for residents of Navi Mumbai, Raigad and surrounding areas, many of whom rely heavily on suburban trains for their commute.

Along with introducing additional trains, the Railway Board has also approved halt stations at Targhar and Gavhan—two long-standing demands of daily commuters living in newly developed residential clusters. These halts are expected to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce dependence on road transport, particularly during peak hours.

According to the Railway Board’s communication dated December 3, 2025, the move includes the rollout of 10 suburban services dedicated to the port line route. This is being seen as a major step toward strengthening public transport infrastructure along the fast-growing Uran belt, where residential settlements, industrial zones and port-related activities have surged in recent years.
