Delhi: In a major development in West Bengal’s statewide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Election Commission has identified nearly 26 lakh voter names that do not match with the electoral rolls compiled in 2002. The discrepancies surfaced after the latest list was cross-verified with voter records from 2002–2006, an official said on Wednesday evening.

According to Election Commission sources, the verification and digitisation efforts have been progressing rapidly. Over six crore enumeration forms from across West Bengal were digitised by Wednesday afternoon, and officials expect the number to increase as the ongoing SIR process continues.

The mismatch figures emerged during a detailed “mapping” exercise — a technical method used to compare the present electoral rolls with the SIR data recorded more than two decades ago. For the first time, the mapping also included voter lists from other states, a move initiated by the Chief Electoral Officer’s office to ensure stricter, cross-state scrutiny and improved accuracy.

Officials emphasised that a mismatch does not automatically imply deletion from the voter list. Instead, such cases will undergo further verification before any final decision is taken, ensuring voters are not erroneously removed.
