Delhi, October 23: To ease the massive festive travel rush during Diwali and Chhath Puja, the North Eastern Railway (NER) has introduced 186 additional special trains connecting major cities of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with Delhi and other metros, ensuring smoother travel for passengers heading home for the festivals.

186 special trains across key routes

NER’s Chief Public Relations Officer Pankaj Kumar Singh said the move aims to handle the “unprecedented passenger load” during one of India’s busiest travel seasons.

“Thousands are travelling home for Chhath, while others are returning after Diwali. To manage this surge, 186 special trains have been launched across high-demand routes,” Singh said.

Gorakhpur tops the list with 59 special trains

Gorakhpur, one of North India’s busiest railway hubs, will see 59 special services during the festive period. Other key stations include Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, and Siwan, linking to Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Special facilities for passengers

To manage the high festive traffic, the NER has introduced several passenger-friendly measures:

  • Temporary ticket booking counters
  • Real-time digital display boards
  • Enhanced crowd-control systems
  • Additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at major stations

Nationwide record: 12,000+ special train services

Across India, Indian Railways has deployed over 12,000 special train services between October 1 and November 30, a record increase from 2024. This includes 11,865 trips on 916 special trains9,338 reserved and 2,203 unreserved — with 1,500 more trips planned over the next five days, averaging 300 additional daily services.

The initiative underscores the Railway Ministry’s effort to ensure a safe, comfortable, and affordable festive travel experience for millions of passengers heading home this Diwali and Chhath.
