Supreme Court Allows Limited Use of Green Crackers in Delhi-NCR for Diwali, Sets Strict Timings and Monitoring Rules

New Delhi: In a significant relief ahead of Diwali celebrations, the Supreme Court on Wednesday permitted the limited bursting of green crackers in Delhi-NCR from October 18 to 21, setting strict time slots and enforcement measures to curb pollution.

As per the order, residents can burst eco-friendly firecrackers between 6 am and 7 am, and again from 8 pm to 10 pm during the four-day festival period.

Delivering the judgment, Chief Justice BR Gavai recalled the Court’s earlier ruling from October 14, 2024, when the Delhi government had imposed a blanket ban on all types of firecrackers, later extended across the National Capital Region.

“We have to take a balanced approach, permitting it in moderation while not compromising with the environment,” Chief Justice Gavai observed while announcing the order.

Stressing the importance of environmental protection while respecting festive traditions, the bench said that only approved green crackers bearing QR codes would be permitted for sale and use. To ensure compliance, the Court has directed police authorities to deploy special patrolling teams to monitor markets and neighborhoods.
