US Government Shuts Down as Trump, Congress Fail to Reach Funding Deal

Washington D.C: The United States government has entered a shutdown after President Donald Trump and Congress failed to break a deadlock over federal funding, marking the first such crisis in seven years.

The impasse will halt funding for several departments and suspend numerous federal services, though essential operations such as border security, law enforcement, and air-traffic control will continue. Programmes like food assistance, government-funded pre-schools, and national parks are expected to be hit hard.

On Tuesday, Senate Democrats blocked a Republican-backed spending bill, denying it the required 60 votes. Despite Republicans holding a majority in both chambers, the measure received only 53 votes, leaving the government without a funding extension.

Talks between Trump and Democratic leaders on Monday failed to yield results. Instead, Trump escalated his attacks on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, blaming Democrats for the deadlock. “I didn’t see them bend even a little bit,” the President remarked, while warning that the shutdown could trigger layoffs of federal workers. “When you shut it down, you have to do layoffs, we’d be laying off a lot of people,” he said.

At the heart of the standoff is a Democratic demand to reverse healthcare cuts in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”, passed earlier this year. Republicans, however, refused to concede and instead proposed a short-term extension until November 21, which Democrats rejected.
