Arizona: Tens of thousands of mourners gathered at State Farm Stadium on Sunday to pay tribute to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with US President Donald Trump calling him a “great American hero” and a “martyr for freedom.” Vice President JD Vance, senior administration officials, and young conservatives also attended the event, which marked a defining moment for the conservative movement.
Speaking to the crowd, Trump said, “He is a martyr now for America’s freedom. None of us will ever forget Charlie. And neither now will history.”
Speakers repeatedly highlighted Kirk’s Christian faith and his advocacy for young conservatives to marry, raise families, and uphold their values. At times, addresses took a confrontational tone, urging followers to continue Kirk’s mission of pushing American politics further to the right. Vice President Vance remarked, “For Charlie, we must remember that it is better to stand on our feet defending the United States of America and defending the truth than it is to die on our knees. He is a hero to America and a martyr for the Christian faith.”
Kirk was assassinated on September 10 at a college campus in Utah, an event that has sparked national debate on free speech, political violence, and decency in a deeply polarised America.
State Farm Stadium, home to the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and Kirk’s Turning Point USA organisation, was filled to capacity. Security was unprecedented, with tributes delivered from behind bulletproof glass as mourners dressed in red, white, and blue packed the 63,400-seat venue.
In a poignant address, Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk said she drew strength from her husband’s courage, announcing that she would take over leadership of Turning Point. “My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life. I forgive him,” she said. Under Kirk, Turning Point had grown into a multimillion-dollar platform mobilising young Christian conservatives across the US.
Trump blamed the “radical left” for the killing and vowed action against individuals and organisations he said had mocked or celebrated Kirk’s death. Dozens have faced job losses or suspensions following social media posts, sparking fresh debates over free speech and First Amendment rights.
