New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab on September 9 to assess the widespread devastation caused by some of the worst floods the state has faced in recent memory. The visit will include a stop in Gurdaspur, where he will interact with families, farmers, and communities hit hardest by the disaster.

Confirming the plan, the BJP’s Punjab unit posted on X: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to Gurdaspur, Punjab, on 9th September. He will meet directly with the flood-affected brothers-sisters and farmers to share their sorrow and take every possible step to help the victims.” The party added that the Prime Minister’s presence demonstrates the Centre’s commitment to Punjab and its people in their hour of crisis.

Reports indicated that Modi will also tour several rain-battered states—including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand—to take stock of the situation and oversee relief operations. Since June, relentless monsoon rains, flash floods, and landslides have claimed over 500 lives across northern India.

Punjab is among the states bearing the brunt of the calamity. Official estimates suggest that more than 1,650 villages across all 23 districts have been submerged, with nearly 1.75 lakh acres of farmland destroyed—mostly paddy crops. Major rivers, including the Beas, Satluj, Raavi, and Ghaggar, are flowing above danger levels, while controlled releases from dams such as Bhakhra, Pong, and Ranjit Sagar have worsened the flooding.

Gurdaspur remains the most severely hit, with around 1.45 lakh people affected. Other badly impacted districts include Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Fazilka. Punjab has reported 37 confirmed deaths so far, with three people still missing. Flood-related incidents across the state since last month have pushed the toll to 46.

Authorities have closed all schools and colleges until September 7. Meanwhile, large-scale rescue and relief efforts are being carried out by the Army, Air Force, BSF, and NDRF. Despite these operations, many residents continue to grapple with submerged homes, collapsed infrastructure, and crippled transport links.
