New Delhi: An Air India flight bound for Indore was forced to return to the national capital shortly after takeoff on Saturday, after the cockpit crew detected a fire warning in the aircraft’s right engine.

The crew immediately initiated standard safety protocols, shutting down the affected engine and safely landing the aircraft back at Delhi airport. “Flight AI2913, operating from Delhi to Indore on August 31, air-returned to Delhi shortly after takeoff, as the cockpit crew received a fire indication for the right engine,” the airline confirmed in a statement.

All passengers were reported safe, and arrangements were made to accommodate them on an alternate aircraft for onward travel to Indore. The aircraft involved in the incident has been grounded for detailed inspection, while the matter has been reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

This is the second such disruption in recent weeks. On August 22, an Air India flight from Mumbai to Jodhpur aborted takeoff due to an operational snag. In that case, the crew discontinued the takeoff run following SOPs and returned the plane to the bay. Passengers were later shifted to another aircraft.

The latest incident comes amid increased scrutiny of the airline. Earlier this month, the DGCA issued a formal warning to Air India, flagging violations of flight time regulations and urging the carrier to adhere strictly to safety norms. A show cause notice had also been served to the airline on June 20 under the Enforcement Policy and Procedures Manual (EPPM).
