Pune: Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil on Thursday morning reached the base of Shivneri Fort in Pune district with hundreds of supporters, as his march from Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna pushes closer to Mumbai. Jarange has vowed to begin a fresh indefinite hunger strike in the financial capital from August 29, escalating pressure on the state government.

Authorities are on high alert. The Mumbai Police, backed by central forces, has tightened security across the city, anticipating a massive turnout and potential law-and-order challenges. Nearly 1,000 police personnel will be deployed, with CRPF units stationed at sensitive points. The protest coincides with Ganeshotsav festivities, prompting fears of traffic chaos and public disruption.

As per official orders, Jarange’s protest has been permitted at Azad Maidan, but under stringent restrictions. The agitation will be allowed only on August 29 between 9 am and 6 pm, capped at 5,000 participants. No marches, processions, or use of loudspeakers will be permitted. Only five vehicles carrying organisers will be allowed from Wadi Bunder Junction, with all other vehicles diverted to designated parking sites. Protesters must vacate the ground immediately after 6 pm.

The decision follows a Bombay High Court ruling that no protest can proceed without police approval. The limited clearance was given to prevent disruption, but Jarange has outrightly rejected the terms. Calling them “unfair and insufficient”, he declared:
“The Maratha community’s demand for inclusion in the OBC quota cannot be met with symbolic gestures or temporary assurances. This is not just a demonstration; it is a fight for justice. I will start an indefinite hunger strike on August 29 until a permanent solution is found.”

Jarange accused the Maharashtra government of stalling despite repeated promises. He urged supporters to remain steadfast: “We cannot settle for half-measures. Our struggle will continue until Marathas get rightful inclusion in OBC quota.”
