Lonavala: In a move widely welcomed by Ganesh mandals and devotees, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has officially revoked the decision to impose service fees on Ganesh mandals in Lonavala. The reversal comes after strong opposition from local cultural organizations, festival organizers, and citizens.

The initial proposal by Lonavala civic authorities sought to charge a “service fee” to mandals for using public spaces and accessing civic services during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which was criticized for putting financial pressure on smaller mandals and potentially discouraging community participation.

Following representations from various mandal leaders and social groups, Deputy CM Shinde intervened, highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of Ganesh Utsav in Maharashtra. In a video recording, Shinde can be heard telling officials, “The sarvajanik mandals are continuing our culture, why is service fee imposed on them?”

Shinde directed the Lonavala Municipal Council to immediately cancel the proposed charges and ensure smooth cooperation with mandals during the festival. The decision has been praised by local leaders and mandal organizers, who hailed Shinde’s move as a step toward preserving the community-driven spirit of Ganeshotsav.
