Bhopal: A major political row erupted in Madhya Pradesh after Congress state president Jitu Patwari claimed that women in the state consume more liquor than anywhere else in India.

Patwari accused the ruling BJP of fostering a culture of alcohol and drug abuse. He said, “Women in Madhya Pradesh drink the most in the country. Votes were won in the name of Ladli Behna, but now the same women are consuming the highest amount of alcohol. MP has even surpassed infamous Punjab when it comes to drug consumption.”

He directly targeted Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, saying they failed to take action against rampant liquor and drug addiction.

The remarks drew sharp condemnation from BJP leaders. Reacting strongly, CM Mohan Yadav said, “The state will not tolerate any disrespect towards women. Jitu Patwari’s statement, especially on Hariyali Teej, is unacceptable. He should apologise to women across Madhya Pradesh.”

BJP MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also hit back, calling Patwari’s comments “insulting” and reflective of Congress’ “anti-women mindset.” He argued that official data shows other regions, including rural Telangana, consume more liquor.

Meanwhile, BJP minister Kailash Vijayvargiya dismissed Patwari’s remarks as “foolish” and said they were an insult to the women of the state. “Women in Madhya Pradesh are more religious and responsible. The Congress has a habit of disrespecting women, and it must apologise,” he said.
