New Delhi: A stormy showdown is expected in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as the Union government prepares to introduce three highly controversial bills aimed at tightening accountability of top political officeholders. The proposed legislation seeks automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, or Ministers of State if they remain in jail for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges.
The Union Home Ministry will table the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to lead the charge, moving a motion to send the bills to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed scrutiny.
Even before the bills were placed, Opposition parties accused the Centre of weaponising legislation to destabilise non-BJP governments. Leaders argued that such provisions could be misused through politically motivated arrests orchestrated by central agencies.
