Opposition Mulls Impeachment Motion Against Chief Election Commissioner Over ‘Vote Chori’ Allegations

New Delhi: The political storm over alleged voter list manipulation escalated on Monday, with Opposition parties indicating that they may initiate an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). This comes amid growing protests across the country over what the Opposition terms as “systematic vote chori” under the BJP’s watch.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who has been leading the charge through the ongoing Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar, accused the Election Commission of acting as a “silent partner” in electoral malpractice. “The voter list is the foundation of democracy. If it is manipulated, then elections lose legitimacy. If the Election Commission refuses to act, we will be forced to explore constitutional remedies, including impeachment,” Gandhi told reporters.

Leaders from other Opposition blocs echoed the sentiment, with Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Tejashwi Yadav alleging that “the Commission has become an extended arm of the ruling party. If constitutional authorities fail to safeguard people’s rights, Parliament must step in.”

The push for impeachment gained momentum after the Election Commission rejected allegations of vote theft in Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Commission, in its press conference on Sunday, asked Rahul Gandhi to either provide proof through a signed affidavit or apologise for what it called “baseless accusations.”
