India Tightens Port Restrictions, Blocks Bangladesh Land Imports to Protect Domestic Industry

New Delhi: In a move to safeguard domestic manufacturers and regulate trade, India has imposed strict restrictions on the import of several goods, including bleached and unbleached woven fabrics of jute and other textile bast fibers, as well as jute twine, cordage, ropes, sacks, and bags.

Significantly, imports of these items from Bangladesh will no longer be permitted through any land ports along the India-Bangladesh border. Instead, such imports will only be allowed via the Nhava Sheva Seaport, the country’s major maritime gateway.

The new regulations aim to monitor and control the inflow of specific jute products, which have seen rising imports that impact local producers. By limiting entry points, authorities intend to enhance scrutiny and ensure compliance with trade and quality standards.
