“1971 Had Political Will, Does Operation Sindoor?” Rahul Gandhi Questions Government’s Strategy in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: In a pointed and historically grounded address during the ongoing Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi drew a sharp contrast between the government’s current handling of counter-terror operations and the decisive leadership shown during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Rahul Gandhi emphasized that successful military outcomes are rooted in two fundamental principles: political will and freedom of operation. “There are two words — ‘Political Will’ and ‘Freedom of Operation’. If you want to utilise the Indian Armed Forces effectively, you need to have 100% political will and full freedom of operation,” he said.

The Congress leader was responding to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s previous remarks, in which Singh had drawn parallels between the 1971 Indo-Pak war and Operation Sindoor. Rahul Gandhi used the opportunity to underscore the stark differences in leadership between the two eras.

“Yesterday, Rajnath Singh compared 1971 and Sindoor. I would like to remind him that there was political will in 1971,” Rahul stated. “The Seventh Fleet was approaching India through the Indian Ocean. The then Prime Minister said — we will do what we must in Bangladesh. Come wherever you have to,” he added, referring to the firm stance taken by then PM Indira Gandhi during the war.

He further cited the example of General Sam Manekshaw being given a free hand during the 1971 campaign. “Indira Gandhi told General Manekshaw: take six months, one year — whatever time you need — because you should have freedom of action and manoeuvre,” Rahul said, highlighting the strategic patience and clarity that led to India’s victory.

“1 lakh Pakistani soldiers surrendered, and a new country was formed,” he reminded the House, urging the government to reflect on the foundational principles that lead to genuine success in military and strategic affairs.
