Teen Gives Birth on Moving Bus in Maharashtra, Throws Newborn Out Window; Infant Dies, Couple Detained

Parbhani: In a deeply disturbing incident, a 19-year-old woman allegedly gave birth to a baby inside a moving sleeper coach bus and then, with the help of a man claiming to be her husband, threw the newborn out of the window, leading to the infant’s death. The tragic episode unfolded around 6:30 AM on Tuesday on the Pathri-Selu road in Parbhani district.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Ritika Dhere, and her companion Altaf Shaikh were traveling from Pune to Parbhani aboard a Sant Prayag Travels sleeper coach. During the journey, Ritika went into labour and delivered a baby inside the bus.

What followed shocked both passengers and authorities. Just moments after the delivery, the couple allegedly wrapped the infant in a cloth and flung the baby out of the bus window. When questioned by fellow travelers, the duo initially claimed Ritika was unwell and had vomited due to travel sickness.

However, a motorcyclist riding behind the bus witnessed the act and, upon stopping to check what was thrown out, made the horrifying discovery of a newborn baby wrapped in cloth, lying lifeless by the roadside. He immediately called the emergency helpline 112, prompting police intervention.

Based on the alert, a patrol team quickly intercepted the bus and detained the couple for questioning. During the inquiry, both Ritika and Altaf admitted to discarding the baby, stating they were not financially capable of raising a child. The infant reportedly died due to injuries from the fall.

Although the couple insisted they were married and had been residing together in Pune for over a year and a half, they could not produce any legal documents to verify their relationship. Police later transferred Ritika to a hospital for post-delivery medical care.

A case has been filed at Pathri Police Station under Sections 94 (3) and (5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to the secret disposal of a newborn. Legal notices have been issued to both individuals, and a deeper investigation is underway.
