Tesla Unveils First India Showroom at Mumbai’s BKC, Showcasing Model Y and Model 3

Mumbai: Marking a new chapter in India’s automotive landscape, Tesla has officially launched its first showroom in the country, choosing Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) as its debut location. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the ceremonial opening at Maker Maxity on Monday, hailing it as a “transformational moment” for India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector.

The 4,000-square-foot experience centre will showcase Tesla’s globally popular models—Model Y and Model 3. While bookings for the vehicles opened immediately after the launch, deliveries will begin in August, initially limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

“This is a proud moment not just for Maharashtra but for India. Tesla’s entry reaffirms Maharashtra’s position as the leader in electric mobility and clean tech infrastructure,” said CM Fadnavis during the launch.

The Mumbai showroom, located adjacent to the Apple flagship store in BKC, reportedly commands a monthly lease of ₹35 lakh, reflecting Tesla’s aggressive intent to target the premium EV market in India. Though the event was a soft launch, Tesla is expected to host a grand inauguration in the coming weeks.

Tesla’s India-bound vehicles—Model Y and Model 3—have been imported fully assembled from China, attracting import duties of nearly 70%, resulting in starting prices of approximately ₹40 lakh. Despite the steep pricing, the brand has generated significant buzz among affluent Indian buyers and EV enthusiasts.

The Model Y, Tesla’s best-selling SUV globally, will be the headline product at the showroom. Available in Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD (Dual Motor) versions, the Model Y offers an impressive range of up to 574 km and a 0–100 kmph time of just 4.6 seconds.

The Model 3, positioned as Tesla’s most affordable offering in India, will be available for viewing but is expected to officially go on sale later in 2025. Its top variant claims a range of 507 km, a 0–100 kmph sprint in 3.1 seconds, and a top speed of 162 kmph.

In parallel, Tesla is setting up a comprehensive service ecosystem in India. The company has leased a 24,500 sq ft facility in Kurla West, close to its BKC showroom, to serve as its first dedicated service centre in the country.
