Odisha CM Announces Rs 20 Lakh Ex-Gratia After Balasore Student’s Tragic Death, Calls Incident “Heartbreaking”

Balasore: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the death of the 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who died after setting herself on fire in protest against inaction on her sexual harassment complaint. The Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia amount of ₹20 lakhs to be given to the deceased’s family as a gesture of support and solidarity.

The student had been battling for life at AIIMS Bhubaneswar for three days before succumbing to her injuries late Sunday night. Her self-immolation on the college campus sent shockwaves across the state and triggered widespread outrage over alleged negligence by college authorities in handling her repeated complaints.

In a statement issued on Monday, CM Majhi said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic demise of the young student from Balasore. Despite the best efforts of our medical teams, we could not save her. This incident is heartbreaking and has shaken all of us.”

He added that the government stands firmly with the grieving family and will ensure that justice is delivered. “An ex-gratia amount of ₹20 lakhs will be given to the family of the deceased. I have directed senior officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and take strict action against anyone found guilty,” he said.
