PM Modi Personally Informs Ujjwal Nikam of Rajya Sabha Nomination in Heartfelt Call, Switches to Marathi to Share the News

New Delhi: In a rare and personal gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally informed noted legal luminary and Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam of his nomination to the Rajya Sabha. The candid phone call, which took place on July 12, left Nikam both surprised and honoured.

Speaking to the media in Mumbai, Nikam shared the heartwarming moment: “PM Modi called me and asked if he should speak in Hindi or in Marathi. Both of us started laughing,” Nikam recalled, adding that the Prime Minister then continued in Marathi and said that the President wished to entrust him with new responsibilities. “I immediately said yes,” he said, expressing deep gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and the BJP leadership.

Ujjwal Nikam, who gained nationwide recognition for leading the prosecution in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case, is among four distinguished individuals nominated to the Rajya Sabha, as per a Gazette notification issued by the Centre late Saturday night.

Congratulating Nikam, PM Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Ujjwal Nikam Ji’s devotion to the legal field and to the Constitution is exemplary. He has not only been a successful lawyer but also been at the forefront of seeking justice in important cases. His consistent efforts to uphold the dignity of common citizens stand out.”

Nikam also revealed that the nomination followed a prior meeting with the Prime Minister during the Lok Sabha election campaign, where Modi expressed his faith in him. “Yesterday, PM Modi called to inform me about the nomination… I thank the party leadership,” he said.
