Fake Air India Crash Report Sparks Panic on WhatsApp, Govt Confirms It’s Entirely False

New Delhi: A false message claiming that an Air India flight crashed shortly after take-off has gone viral on WhatsApp, prompting government authorities to issue an urgent clarification. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) confirmed on Thursday that the so-called preliminary investigation report of Air India Flight AI-171, allegedly attributed to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), is completely fabricated.

The message falsely claimed that a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed 38 seconds after take-off, killing 247 people on board. According to the fake report, a mechanical failure involving the captain’s seat led to accidental throttle reduction, which in turn caused the crash.

To appear credible, the message included technical jargon, such as maintenance record numbers, seat model codes, voice recordings from the cockpit, and a supposed sequence of flight events. It even blamed a supposed malfunction in the seat-locking mechanism for the captain’s inability to control the aircraft during takeoff, with the co-pilot allegedly unable to take over in time.

On Thursday, PIB took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to issue a formal rebuttal. In its post, PIB said, “A message circulating on #WhatsApp claims to be the preliminary investigation report of the AI-171 crash by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau. #PIBFactCheck: This message is #Fake. This report has not been issued by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau. Always rely on official sources for accurate information.”

Officials clarified that no such incident involving Air India has occurred and that no such report has been released by the AAIB or any other credible aviation authority.
