Former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy named accused in fatal accident case during Palnadu visit, police invoke culpable homicide charges

Delhi: Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been officially named as an accused in a road accident case that claimed the life of an elderly man in Palnadu district. The incident took place on June 18 during Reddy’s visit to Rentapalla village, and police say new evidence has prompted serious legal action.

Guntur district Superintendent of Police, S Satish Kumar, informed the media on Sunday that the fatal incident occurred while Reddy’s convoy was travelling via the Etukuru bypass. He was on his way to visit the family of a local YSRCP leader who had died by suicide the previous year. During the journey, a pedestrian identified as Singaiah was struck by one of the vehicles in the convoy.

Despite immediate efforts to save him, Singaiah was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Initially, a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), related to causing death by negligence, was filed based on a complaint from the victim’s wife, Cheeli Lurdhu Mary. But following an investigation that included analysis of CCTV footage, drone surveillance, and other on-site evidence, the charges were upgraded.

“Evidence clearly indicates that the vehicle that hit the victim was part of the former Chief Minister’s convoy. Given the nature of the incident, we have now invoked Sections 105, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and Section 49 for abetment,” SP Kumar said.

Apart from Jagan Mohan Reddy, several others linked to the convoy have also been named in the case. This includes his driver Ramana Reddy, personal assistant K Nageshwar Reddy, senior YSRCP leader YV Subba Reddy, former MLA Perni Venkataramaiah, and former minister Vidadala Rajini.

The development has sent shockwaves across Andhra Pradesh’s political circles, with the YSRCP yet to issue an official response. Meanwhile, legal experts suggest the upgraded charges could lead to a prolonged legal battle for the former CM and his close aides.
