Heavy Rains Trigger Flood-Like Conditions in Gujarat and Maharashtra; IMD Issues Alerts Across Multiple States

Mumbai: Several districts in Gujarat and Maharashtra are witnessing flood-like conditions following intense rainfall in the last 24 hours, prompting rescue efforts and weather warnings. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rain in numerous states from June 20 to 25, as the southwest monsoon strengthens its grip over northern and central India.

In Pune, waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas, with visuals of temple premises submerged and vehicular movement severely affected. In Gujarat’s Valsad district, a van was swept away by the Kharela River, swollen by incessant rain. NDRF teams have been deployed to handle rescue operations and ensure public safety in vulnerable areas.

The IMD has placed orange alerts across the ghat regions of Pune, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, while green and yellow alerts have been issued across other districts of Maharashtra. These include Mumbai, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur, all expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days.

IMD’s Forecast Highlights:

• June 20–25: Widespread rainfall forecast for Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Rajasthan.
• June 20: Heavy rain likely in Gujarat, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Central Maharashtra, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
• June 21: Eastern Madhya Pradesh to witness heavy showers and winds up to 50 kmph.
• June 22–25: Rainfall to intensify in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh.
• Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: Showers expected between June 22 and 24.
• Northeastern states: Thunderstorms and lightning likely to continue over the next 7 days.

In eastern Uttar Pradesh, heavy rain is forecast for June 20 and 21, while Uttarakhand and eastern Rajasthan are expected to see isolated intense spells throughout the forecast period.

The IMD also notes a drop of 2°C to 4°C in maximum temperatures across Madhya Pradesh, providing some relief from heat in the region. However, no significant temperature changes are expected in other parts of the country.
