Madrid: In a powerful message to the Indian diaspora and the international community, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, while leading a high-level all-party delegation to Spain, reaffirmed the core identity of India as one built on unity amid diversity. The visit is part of India’s global outreach efforts following the successful Operation Sindoor, aimed at reinforcing national security and democratic values on the world stage.
While addressing an engaged crowd of Indian expatriates in Madrid, Kanimozhi was asked what India’s national language is. Her response struck a deeply emotional chord.
“The national language of India is unity in diversity. That is the message this delegation brings to the world, and that is the most important thing today,” she said, met with resounding applause.
Her statement echoed India’s constitutional ethos, which recognises 22 official languages under the Eighth Schedule but does not assign any one language as the national language—a fact that often surprises many outside the country.
The delegation, which also includes MPs Rajeev Kumar Rai (SP), Brijesh Chowta (BJP), Ashok Mittal (AAP), Prem Chand Gupta (RJD) and former diplomat Manjeev Singh Puri, is on the final leg of a five-nation tour. Their mission: to engage foreign governments, policy think tanks, and Indian communities abroad, building consensus around India’s democratic resilience, counter-terror stance, and pluralistic values in a shifting global order.
“So much has to be done in our country and we want to do that. Unfortunately, we are being diverted. We have to deal with terrorism, war which is absolutely unnecessary,” Kanimozhi added, drawing attention to the global security challenges India continues to face.
The outreach comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor—India’s precision military response to the Pahalgam terror attack—which has reshaped international perceptions of India’s strategic clarity and zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
