Mock Drills in 244 Districts: India Trains Civilians for Wartime Scenarios

New Delhi: In a renewed push for national emergency readiness, civil defence mock drills are scheduled to begin Thursday across four states bordering Pakistan — Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Simultaneously, Haryana is preparing for a large-scale civil defence exercise titled Operation Shield, to be held on May 29 across all 22 districts. The state-wide drill will commence at 5 pm, aiming to bolster Haryana’s capabilities in emergency response and public safety protocols.

These civil preparedness efforts come just weeks after India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror hubs in Pakistan, followed by a mutual agreement between the two nations to halt all military action and cross-border firing.

The drills also follow the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives. In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs rolled out Operation Abhyaas, a nationwide civil defence program. As part of this initiative, 244 districts across the country have been instructed to conduct comprehensive mock drills.

These drills include blackout exercises, air raid sirens, evacuation protocols, and public awareness campaigns — all designed to simulate wartime emergencies and better prepare civilians for real-world crisis situations.
