IMD lowers monsoon rainfall projection
The IMD revised India’s monsoon forecast downward amid El Nino concerns.

New Delhi: India is likely to witness above-normal rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday. The weather office has predicted that June rainfall will be around 108 per cent of the long-period average (LPA), offering promising signs for farmers and water-dependent sectors across the country.

In a press briefing, M Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, said that the monsoon core zone—comprising vital agricultural regions including parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and surrounding areas—is expected to receive above-normal rainfall this year. This zone plays a crucial role in India’s food production and relies heavily on monsoon rains for seasonal crops.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra shared a detailed regional outlook, stating that northwest India is likely to receive normal rainfall, while northeast India may witness below-normal showers. On the other hand, central and southern peninsular India are expected to experience above-average rainfall during the season.

The IMD, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated: “Updated Long Range Forecast For the Southwest Monsoon Seasonal Rainfall during 2025. Quantitatively, the southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September, 2025) rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of LPA (Long Period Average) with a model error of ± 4%. This indicates that above normal rainfall is most likely to occur over the country as a whole during the monsoon season (June to September, 2025). The LPA of the season rainfall over the country as a whole for the period 1971–2020 is 87 cm.”
