New Delhi: In the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the horrific terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam — which claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists — the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a directive to several states across the country to conduct mock civil defence drills on Wednesday, May 7.

The move is aimed at strengthening national emergency preparedness and ensuring citizens are equipped to respond swiftly and effectively in the event of hostile attacks or large-scale emergencies.

According to officials, the following key activities will be part of the coordinated nationwide exercise:

Air Raid Warning Sirens will be tested to assess operational readiness and public response.

Crash blackouts will be practiced, helping urban areas reduce visibility during potential air strikes or power grid attacks.

Civilians and students will be trained on self-protection techniques during attacks and evacuations.

Camouflage demonstrations will be held for key infrastructure such as factories and energy plants to minimize their exposure during hostile situations.

Evacuation plans will be updated and rehearsed to ensure safe and efficient civilian movement under pressure.

A senior MHA official said, “These drills are not just symbolic; they are crucial for our preparedness. Public participation and awareness are central to building a resilient civil defence network.”

With the recent escalation in diplomatic strain between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, and the Centre’s tightening focus on national security, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to minimize civilian vulnerability and infrastructural damage during any future crisis.
