Chandigarh: A political storm is brewing over a growing water crisis in Haryana, with Congress MP Randeep Surjewala blaming both the BJP-led central government and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for pushing the state into what he called the “worst water crisis since 1966.”

The issue flared after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann refused to release additional water to Haryana, claiming that Punjab had already fulfilled its allocated share for the season. This decision drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders across party lines.

Surjewala, speaking at a press conference, launched a scathing attack on both governments. “The Modi-led government at the Centre and the Punjab government have pushed Haryana into a water crisis! The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) falls under the Electricity Minister. Why is Khattar ji not probing this?” he said.

According to Surjewala, the water supply from Bhakra Dam to Haryana has drastically reduced from 8,500 cusecs to 4,000 cusecs. “This is the biggest water crisis since Haryana’s formation in 1966,” he asserted.

He also took aim at the state leadership: “Bhagwant Mann and Nayab Singh Saini are only exchanging love letters while the people suffer. Power has gone to Mann’s head, and Saini seems clueless.”

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu added fuel to the fire, saying, “When the nation stands united against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, CM Bhagwant Mann chooses to divide states over water. Not a single drop of Punjab’s water will be given away—but this is no time for political posturing.”

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini responded by accusing Mann of politicizing the issue. “This is not about the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. This is about drinking water. Haryana received only 4,000 cusecs of water last week—just 60% of what we need. We’re not even getting our full share,” Saini said.
