In a significant political move, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced it will not contest the upcoming Delhi mayoral election scheduled for April 25, citing a lack of majority in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The announcement came just ahead of the nomination deadline on Monday.
With this decision, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which currently holds a slight edge in the MCD, is poised to take control of the mayor’s office — a strategic win that would consolidate its influence across municipal, state, and central governance, often described by party leaders as the creation of a “triple-engine government.”
Current MCD Composition:
- AAP: 125 seats
- BJP: 115 seats
- Congress: 9 seats
- Independent: 1 seat
While AAP remains the single largest party in the MCD, the BJP has been gaining ground steadily through recent victories in ward-level and standing committee elections.
