TMC MP Yusuf Pathan Under Fire for Absence Amid Murshidabad Violence, Faces Criticism from Local Leaders

Kolkata: Days after Murshidabad in West Bengal was shaken by communal violence, Yusuf Pathan, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Baharampur, has come under increasing criticism for his absence from the district during the crisis. The violence, which erupted after protests against the Waqf Amendment Act on April 12, claimed three lives, leading to widespread unrest across various areas, including Samserganj, Dhulian, and Suti.

Pathan, who represents one of the three Lok Sabha constituencies in Murshidabad, sparked a public outcry when he shared a post on social media on the same day violence broke out. The post showed him enjoying tea with a caption that read, “Easy afternoons, good chai and calm surroundings. Just soaking in the moment.” This post was seen as tone-deaf by many, including the opposition and some sections within his own party, as it appeared disconnected from the turmoil in his constituency.

The incident has led to growing discontent among TMC leaders and activists. While other TMC MPs from Murshidabad, Abu Taher Khan and Jangipur MP Khalilur Rehman, have been actively engaging with local residents in peace meetings, Pathan’s absence has raised questions about his commitment to his constituency during a time of crisis. Local leaders pointed out that his presence could have been vital in reassuring the community and supporting efforts to restore peace.

TMC MLA from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir, criticized Pathan’s lack of involvement to Indian Express, saying, “He is a renowned cricketer who lives in Gujarat. He defeated Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in the elections, but now he is ignoring his responsibilities to the voters.” Kabir further warned that if Pathan did not change his approach, he would raise the issue with party leadership and push to ensure that he does not receive a ticket in future elections.

The violence in Murshidabad has led to the arrest of over 270 people, and while the situation remains tense, local TMC leaders are working hard to mend the community relations and restore normalcy. The party continues to hold peace meetings, with key leaders actively engaging in efforts to calm tensions and support the victims of the violence.
