Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday celebrated a momentous occasion as he visited his parliamentary constituency for the 50th time, inaugurating and laying the foundation for Rs 3,880 crore worth of development projects aimed at transforming Varanasi into a rapidly growing city.

Addressing a massive gathering of over 50,000 people, PM Modi reflected on the tremendous progress Varanasi has made in the last decade, from being an ancient city to becoming a beacon of modern growth. “In the last 10 years, Varanasi has progressed rapidly. Kashi has protected history, embraced modernity, and taken strong steps forward for the future. Kashi is not only ancient but also a growing city,” said the Prime Minister, reiterating his deep connection to the city. “I am indebted to Kashi. Kashi is mine, I am Kashi’s.”

The inauguration included the unveiling of 44 transformative projects that focus on enhancing both urban and rural infrastructure. These initiatives, including improved connectivity, better public amenities, and the modernisation of essential services, are poised to uplift the living standards in Varanasi.

PM Modi stressed the significance of these projects for the region’s future, especially with initiatives like the Har Ghar Jal Yojana (providing water to every household). He expressed confidence that these efforts would create a ‘Viksit Purvanchal’ (developed Eastern region) that would offer more opportunities to the youth.

The Prime Minister also invoked the legacy of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on his birth anniversary, lauding the Centre’s commitment to furthering Phule’s vision of women empowerment, alongside his wife, Savitri Bai Phule’s contributions. Highlighting the contrast between his government’s approach and the opposition’s dynastic politics, PM Modi said, “We are taking forward the idea of ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’ for the nation. Those whose only focus is to conspire to seize power, their resolve is ‘Parivar ka Sath, Parivar ka Vikas.'”

In his address, the Prime Minister also commended Banas Dairy in Varanasi for empowering women through the “Lakhpati Didi” program, and praised the dairy sector’s contribution to India’s position as the largest milk producer in the world.

As part of the day’s events, PM Modi inaugurated key infrastructure projects, including a new transit hostel at the Police Lines and modern police barracks in Ramnagar, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing civic and law enforcement infrastructure. Additionally, he distributed Geographical Indication (GI) certificates for 21 newly registered products from Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant achievement for local artisans and producers.
