Imphal: In a series of intelligence-based operations, security forces have recovered 114 weapons, IEDs, grenades, and large quantities of ammunition across Manipur following the expiration of the two-week deadline for voluntarily surrendering looted and illegally held arms, an official statement said on Saturday.

The operations were conducted in both hill and valley districts, including Bishnupur, Senapati, Thoubal, Jiribam, Chandel, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Imphal East, and Imphal West. According to an army statement, the raids led to the seizure of war-like stores, further strengthening efforts to restore stability in the ethnic strife-hit state.

During the voluntary surrender period, which ended on March 6, more than 1,000 arms and ammunition were handed over to security forces, a senior police officer confirmed. The initiative was launched following Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s appeal on February 20, urging armed groups to return looted and illegal weapons to help restore peace and communal harmony.

Initially, a seven-day surrender window was provided, but due to public demand from both hill and valley regions, the deadline was extended until 4 PM on March 6. The administration had assured that no punitive action would be taken against those who complied, emphasizing that this was “the last opportunity to contribute to peace, the future of our youth, and the security of society.”
